The weather was kind to us and we managed our demo without getting wet!
The demo team gave a great performance again, with Maeve getting the loudest applause
for fighting off Rich the teddynapper. Well done all for your continued efforts.
All Grade Nationals 2011:
Nine Mendip students travelled to The K2 Stadium, Crawley, for the National Championships.
Fantastic results with Jessie Navarro winning gold in kata, Sera Navarro, bronze in kumite
and Simon Power winning bronze in kata and gold in kumite. Brilliant work by all.
Fred put in some fantastic performances against England squad members and is definitely
one to watch for the future. Thanks too to Jack Morgan for being squad coach and photographer for the day.
3rd dan for Jack:
A Fantastic achievement for Jack Morgan who gained his 3rd dan at the Spring Course in Guildford on 1st May. He is pictured above with Sensei's Tanaka 8th dan, Inokoshi 3rd dan, Sawada 7th dan and Osaka 8th dan. This makes Jack one of the youngest 3rd dans in the country and is testament to his commitment in furthering his karate skills. ‘Cultivate the spirit of perseverance and the rewards are endless,’ Is a motto we should all strive for.
Best Student Awards:
Maeve Power and Jessica Navarro were judged Best Students of 2010. The trophies are awarded for good etiquette, spirit and attitude, so well done Maeve and Jessie. Come on the boys; let's see some of your names on the trophies next year!
KYU Grade National Championships 2010:
Mendip Squad travelled to Guildford, Surrey to compete against students from all over the country. The students were a credit to our club and showed excellent spirit and etiquette throughout the day. Jack Sparkes fought his way through many rounds to eventually gain a bronze medal in kumite, good work Jack. Sera Navarro, in her first ever karate competition, showed some nerves and despite being a 'few' years older than the field gained 4th place, just missing out on a medal by 1/10 of a point.
Village Demostration:
Well done to everyone who took part in the Stratton on the Fosse Village Day demo, we had lots of positive feed back especially on Maeve's performance!
Summer Course:
Mendip students spent 3 days in Guildford, Surrey training under some of the best instructors in the world! The top Japanese instructors were Sensei Ueki 8th dan, Sensei Kawawada 7th dan, Sensei Imamura 7th dan and Sensei Ohta 7th dan and I'm sure all will agree that it was a fantastic 3 days of training with plenty to think about and work on. At the end of the course Pete Millard sucessfully passed shodan, Mike Harris, nidan and Andy Forster, sandan. Congratulations to them all, their hard work paid off! Well done too to Jack Morgan for passing two parts, having kata only next time.
In-Club grading:
Well done to Simon and Maeve who couldn't make the Glastonbury grading, but passed the in-club grading with flying colours.
Glastonbury Kyu Grading With Sensei Roy Tomlin, 13th June :
The grading followed a very informative training session with Sensei Tomlin which was also very enjoyable. The emphasis being kumite, concentrating mainly on jiyu kihon ippon kumite, which gave everyone many points to think about. Congratulations to all our students on passing their kyu gradings.
